Audio Files Do Not Play: F Keys Are Unavailable - MP3 Codec

Using Windows Media Player v.7 or better, if the F keys are greyed out or unavailable the .mp3 codec may be missing.  A codec is a small software plugin that allows a .mp3 player like Windows Media Player to decode and playback an audio file.  Take the following steps to repair or restore a missing audio codec:

The error will appear in InScribe like this:

First, verify that Windows Media Player 7 or greater is selected as your audio player.

Also verify that Windows Media Player is unable to play .mp3 files outside of the InScribe application.

If all of these conditions are satisfied, the computer may not have a valid .mp3 or MPEG-3 codec installed.    The codec file is attached to this article.

Install the codec from the .exe file and verify that the problem is resolved.
